- douglass is bringing hay to the fan. when mr.sever hears the fan stop he goes over to the fan. soon he finds douglass sick and in pain on the ground he tells douglass to get up and when he doesn't he kicks him in his side. he whips douglass and leaves him to his fate. soon douglass recovers but has to run away to avoid his punishment (whipping)

- he runs into the woods but soon he is faced with two options one go back and get beat to death two stay in the woods and starve to death. that night he stayed with sandy jenkins (an acquaintance of douglass thet is also a slave.) sandy gives douglass a root that he believes prevents any wight man from wiping you douglass is sceptical but takes the root out of kindness and the next day he goes back to the plantation to endure his punishment.
- when he comes back it is sunday and he runs into mr.covey ion his way to church. on sunday he received more punishment, but on saturday in the feild mr covey drags him from his post and begins wiping him but douglass has a spark of revolt. soon a fight brakes out mr.covey trys to cheat by calling for back up and attempting to tie him up in the end douglass won and mr.covey walked away angrily. after that douglass had several fights but was never wiped.
