Storyboard Text

  • Erick and Josh are both excited to start their new lives in college, but everything is not always perfect. Watch how they learn to interact respectfully and professionally despite their different backgrounds.
  • I'm Josh!
  • Erick Josh:NEW ROOMMATES
  • I'm Erick!
  • Josh is studying abroad, while Erick is from a local town outside the city. Neither of them have ever lived with anyone outside of their families before.
  • While they both have similar interests, their backgrounds are very different. Erick comes from a big family that likes to get together for traditions and cook big meals. Josh comes from a smaller family who likes to travel and explore the world.
  • It's good to finally meet you.
  • Yea you too! I hope you like it out here
  • Since learning of Josh's heritage, in an attempt to make him feel comfortable Erick had started making traditional food from Josh's country. While Josh appreciated the gesture, he wished Erick would have said something before making assumptions on what he likes to eat.
  • He must know I like to eat other kinds of food.... Right?
  • Hey man, I made ya something!
  • While it seemed like Erick meant no harm, Josh felt conflicted on whether to let it go or to bring it up. He didn't want to seem rude either, but all these assumptions seemed like a slippery slope to be going down.
  • Before it went any further Josh decided to sit Erick down and have a conversation with him.
  • Erick was embarrassed and shocked, he was really only trying to help, but he was quickly able to put together the other perspective with the help of Josh explaining his boundaries.
  • I appreciate when you cook for me, but my family likes to travel and I was hoping to try new things while I was visiting here. Maybe you could show me around some of your favorite places?
  • Of course! I really am sorry, I was raised with cooking for people as a welcoming gesture and I guess I got too excited with trying to make you feel welcome.
  • Erick quickly recognized and began to work on his subconscious assumptions and saw how it could lead to stereotyping. All while getting to know Josh and learning how similar they really were.
  • Josh realized that it's important to address tough conversations early on, he felt that if he just let things go that they would fester and become more negative over time. Now they can be more prepared for more broad and advanced conversations in the future.
  • Although Erick and Josh came from different backgrounds, they were able to handle it professionally by addressing their differences and boundaries in a respectful conversation right off the bat. This opened the door to plenty of deep and meaningful conversations throughout their life as they remained friends.
