  • Thomas and Mary Poynton Birth
  •   Mary Kennedy was born in 1812 in Sydney from an Irish Catholic background Thomas Poynton was born in Ireland 1802. He was also educated in France and convicted of 'Whiteboyism'
  • Marriage
  • Thomas was transported to Sydney in 1822, later met Mary Kennedy and they married in 1828.
  • Moved To New Zealand
  • Then they also moved to NZ in 1828 and were based in Hokianga and lived in Papakawau. They were still there at the time of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. They also had 3 children called Mary Margaret (born 1830), Edward (born 1832), and Catherine (born 1836).

  • There was no catholic parish in NZ at the time, so they travelled to Sydney to have their first two children baptized because of their strong faith. Thomas Poynton also went to ask for a Catholic priest to help the Catholic community in NZ and the other Pacific Islands. Also, Thomas read from a prayer book that Bishop Polding gave him while they waited.
  • Also in NZ other Catholics from NZ came with them to Sydney because of faith. and in 1835 Thomas Cassidy and his partner Maraea Kuri went to Sydney to get married and have a baby that would be baptized. The same year two young Maori people were sent to Sydney by their chiefs to be instructed in the Catholic faith and be trained as catechists which wouldn't have happened without Thomas and Mary
  • in 1833 a decision had been made to appoint a bishop for NZ and Bishop Pompallier arrived in January 1838 and stayed at the home of Thomas and Mary Poynton until he got his own house in Kororareka. Pompallier celebrated the first Mass in NZ on 13th on January 1838 at Totara Point, Hokianga
