  • BAM!
  • It was such a doozy that George was white and trembling, and tears stood on the rims of his red eyes. Two of of the eight ballerinas had collapsed to the studio floor, were holding their temples (Vonnegut 2).
  • BAM!
  • TWO YEARS IN PRISON AND TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS FINE FOR EVERY BALL I TOOK OUT. I DON'T CALL THAT A BARGAIN
  • Scrap metal was hung all over him. Ordinarily, there was a certain symmetry, a military neatness to the handicaps issued to strong people, but Harrison looked like a walking junkyard. In the race of life, Harrison carried three hundred pounds (Vonnegut 4).
  • If you see this boy, do not - I repeat - do not try to reason with him.
  • I am the Emperor!
  • You could say that again.
  • Gee- I could tell that one was a doozy.
  • Gee- I could tell that one was a doozy.
  • Kurt Vonnegut, in his short story, Harrison Bergeron, pokes fun at a world, where everyone is equal and competition is virtually eliminated. Intelligent people suffer for using their brains. The ballerinas fall onto the stage after hearing the loud sounds in their ears. George reveals that trying to lighten his burden will cost him two years in prison and two thousand dollars. Harrison becomes a mentally unstable person, who is severely abused, so that others have an advantage over him. Lastly, normal people, like Hazel, are dumbed down so much, they cannot understand commonly-used phrases. Vonnegut is showing through his writing what society would look like if everyone was truly equal. The smart, talented, and beautiful people are not treated equally, and rather, they are abused. They are treated unfairly for their natural talent, intelligence, and looks. In achieving equality, the society is masking bigotry, abuse, and inequality as a normal, fair society.
