- I have "made up my mind to take the life of the old man." I don't want his money or anything like that. He just has this Weird eye, and it really creeps me out. "The old man’s eye was like a vulture’s. It was pale blue with a thick film over it." Murdering him will allow me to "rid myself of the eye for ever."
- "Every night at midnight, I would slowly open the old man’s bedroom door to peek upon the eye…"
- · On the eighth night, I slowly opened the door and my finger slipped on the lantern. The old man cried out, “Who’s there?” The eye was open and staring straight at me. It chilled my bones. I could hear the old man’s heart thumping.

- "With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once - Once only. You would think i am crazy because I concealed the body so well. A mad person would not have been so careful as I was. there was no trace of the old man under the floorboards. I thought I had nothing to fear when I heard a knock from below. Neighbors heard yelling and called the police. i was calm when they arrived. i could still hear his heart beating......

- · After searching the house and finding nothing wrong, the officers decided to sit and chat. . The noise got louder and louder. .I couldn’t stand it anymore! I told them, “I admit the deed! Here! Here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!”
- "A shriek [was] heard by a neighbor during the night."
- "Suspicion of foul play [has] been aroused...and [we have] been deputed to search the premises."
- "'dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks...it is the beating of his hideous heart!'"
