The traders (most likely Arab) would first come to a meeting place (usually by a river) and spread out the items they wish to trade. They would beat a drum to let the Wangarans know that they wanted to trade. Then, they would walk away.
Next, the Wangarans would come to see what had been left. If they decided to trade, they would beat a drum, leave gold near the trade items, and leave.
The traders would come back to decide if the amount of gold the Wangarans left was a sufficient payment. If it was, the traders would simply take it and leave. If it wasn't, they would beat a drum again and wait for the Wangarans to leave more gold.
The Wangarans would come back and add the amount of gold they thought the traders required. If they thought that the trader's items didn't require more gold, I guess they would probably just beat the drum and walk away until the traders took the gold, added an item, or ended the trade.
The traders would come back to see what the Wangarans had done, and then respond by adding an item or waiting for more gold depending on what had happened. The sides would continue on like this until both were happy.
Once both sides were satisfied, the trade was complete and both sides left with the items they had traded for, the traders with gold, the Wangarans with the traders' items. An agreement was reached without ever talking to each other or meeting face to face.
