Sam was not good at lying..."I lowered my head again, suppressing the urge to tell Father that it was only Bucky. I'd tell him anything to smooth the worried crease from his brow" (Magoon 36). Sam was having a hard time lying to Father so he just lowered his head so he wouldn't see.
Chapter 12 (Sam knows what he wants)
Sam ignored his Fathers words and listened to the anger and fire inside of him "Logic urged me to run, get away, but something kept me there...I surrendered to the wave, the fire. I picked up a brick from the sidewalk and flung it through the store window, then I rushed into the building" (Magoon 97). Sam changed because he wouldn't have ever done that before but now he is and he's letting it happen.
Chapter 19 (The sadness)
Sam didn't change "'Maxie needed some help with math, so I came and showed her.' Why did I have to lie? The shards already loose in me dug deeper" (Magoon 131). If Sam changed then he wouldn't feel bad about lying and leaving without permission but he does.
Sam is changing. "My eyes locked on the Panthers. I could've been down there with them. I could've been part of the reason everyone was staring. With Sticks gun tucked secretly under my dress clothes, I was one of them, wasn't I?" (Magoon 185).
Sam didn't know what to do, "I shoved away and ran. Father called after me, his voice breaking on my name. He couldn't come after me. I ran until Father's voice faded behind me..." (Magoon 255).
