Storyboard Text

  • Toussaint Breda was born into slavery in Saint Dominique, also known as present day Haiti, in 1797. He learned a lot from his father, who was born a free man. Eventually, Toussaint realized that he's more than just a slave.
  • OH MY! I'm not only a slave, I'm also actually super intelligent and honorable.
  • Toussaint soon mastered the skills of reading and writing. He was particularly interested in the writings of French Enlightenment philosophers since they were about individual rights and equality.
  • The French Revolution began in 1789. This event introduced revolutionaries, who were people who participated in revolutions. They wouldn't agree to end slavery, but they applied "Rights of Man" to all free Frenchmen. This betrayal set off slave revolts in Saint Dominique. Toussaint became the leader of this slave rebellion and is soon renamed "Toussaint L'Oouverture".
  • I'm not open to ending slavery, but what if we give the "Rights of Man" to everybody, except slaves?
  • Sounds good to me.
  • This is unacceptable, this is absolute betrayal! Let's fight the french and earn our rights!!
