- The meaning of Climate is the average weather in a given area over a longer period of time.Climate change is any systematic change in the long-term statistics of climate variables such as temperature, precipitation, pressure, or wind sustained over several decades or longer.
- The Earth's first billion years were very different from the conditions today. The sun was cooler then, but the planet was generally warmer.
- Clues about the past climate areburied in sediments at the bottom of the oceans, locked away in coral reefs, frozen in glaciers and ice caps, and preserved in the rings of trees.
- The Milankovitch cycles include:The shape of Earth's orbit, known as eccentricity; The angle Earth's axis is tilted with respect to Earth's orbital plane, known asobliquity; and. The direction Earth's axis of rotation is pointed, known as precession.
- Volcanic activity ranges fromemission of gases, non-explosive lava emissions to extremely violent explosive bursts that may last many hours.
- Ocean currents are thecontinuous, predictable, directional movement of seawater driven by gravity, wind (Coriolis Effect), and water density. Ocean water moves in two directions: horizontally and vertically.
