- After the Seven Years' War, Britain won and took over all the colonies that had previously belonged to France, but because of this war, Britain was bankrupt.
- Because of the war, Britain was bankrupt, so it began to tax the American colonies. Britain introduced the Stamp Act and the Sugar Act to cover the cost of the war, but the act met strong resistance in the American colonies. Although the Act was cancelled in 1766, it united the people in the Colonies.
- On March 5, 1770, there was an argument between a civilian and a soldier under an officer, but the soldier opened fire on the civilian. Other civilians immediately gathered around them. Several British soldiers came to their aid, but they were stoned and beaten. British troops then opened fire on civilians killing five and wounding six
- The Boston Massacre sparked a British rebellion in The North American colonies, with protesters boarding ships and dumping tea in Boston harbor. The colonists opposed the Tea Tax act because they thought it infringed on their right to be British no taxation without representation
- 1774 the British Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts。These laws took away the autonomy of Massachusetts and many of the rights it had always had. They provoked anger and resistance from the people of the thirteen colonies that later became the United States.
- In June 1776, John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, Robert Livingston of New York, and Roger Sherman of Connecticut gathered to draft a suitable proclamation declaring their determination for independence.Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.
