  • The Legislative BranchIndividuals are selected by having a age of 25 years and by being residents of the U.S.Congress's main job is to make laws for the government.
  • The Executive BranchIndividuals are selected by having a age of 35 years and by being residents of the U.S.Congress's main job is to carry out and enforce laws.
  • The Judicial BranchIndividuals are selected by being in the state for 10 years.Congress's main job is to decide the meaning of laws and when to apply them, and if they break the rules of the Constitution.

  • Checks and Balances
  • Checks allow one branch of government to block actions of another branch. For example the president can check Congress's power to pass the laws by vetoing a bill before it becomes a law. Congress can check the president's power by overriding the veto by a two- thirds majority vote in each house
  • The Amendment Process
  • Article V of the Constitution provides two ways to propose amendments to the document. Amendments may be proposed either by the Congress, through a joint resolution passed by a two-thirds vote, or by a convention called by Congress in response to applications from two-thirds of the state legislatures.
  • The Federal System
  • Only the federal government can coin money, regulate the mail, declare war, or conduct foreign affairs.
