One of the element of romanticism that are found in the story is the scene setting in the forest. One aspect of Romanticism is their admiration in spiritual and supernatural elements. The author uses drawings to demonstrate what he regards as American religion's hypocrisy. He creates a story about a man who is seduced by the devil and give in to his curiosity and faith weakness.
Come on in, Goodman! For the beginning of a journey, the dull place.
After leaving his wife, Faith, Goodman Brown sets out on a journey across a gloomy forest, where he meets a man who greeted him as he was expecting him. The man offered Goodman his staff but Goodman refused saying his family has been a good people and wants to return to the village.
As they were talking, the two come across an elderly woman limping through the woods, Goodman Brown recognizes Goody Cloyse, a religious and respected local woman. The man tapped Cloyse shoulder as she identifies him as the devil and reveals herself to be a witch, on her way to the devil’s evil forest ceremony.
Hey! I wanna go already. I can hear Faith's scream.
Goodman Brown tells the man that he plans to return for Faith's sake. The guy suggests that Goodman Brown take a break. Before leaving, he hands Goodman Brown his staff and tells him he may use it to go to the ceremony if he changes his mind.
Sure, but take my staff if you want to go the ceremony.
Soon after, Woodman hears the minister of the church and Deacon Gookin, who are also on their way to the ceremony. He was s hocked and promises that even if everyone else in the world has gone to the devil, he would stay devoted to God for Faith's sake. He soon hears voices coming from the ceremony and believes he knows Faith's voice. He yells her name, and a pink ribbon from her cap falls from the sky.
I can hear voices..
Goodman Brown takes the staff, which draws him fast through the woodland toward the ceremony, certain that there is no good in the world since Faith has gone wicked. When he arrives in the area where the ritual is taking place, the trees around it are on fire, and he can see the faces of many respected members of the society, as well as more disreputable men and women and Indian priests, in the firelight.
Why is Faith here? I can't trust no one now!
The next morning, Goodman Brown returns to Salem Village, and everyone he sees appears to be wicked. Goodman can't trust anyone in his village including his wife, Faith. Goodman think that it was a dream but for the rest of his life, he lives in gloom and fear.
Was it a dream??
