  • THE SILENT PROTEST
  • It was a chilly winter morning on March 12, 1930, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, fondly known as Mahatma Gandhi, stood tall, his eyes gleaming with determination. He was about to embark on a journey that would change the course of Indian history. The British Salt Act had taxed salt, a staple for Indians, and Gandhi decided to challenge it. With a small group of followers, he began the Dandi March, a 24-day walk to the coastal town of Dandi to produce salt illegally.

  • As they marched, the group grew in numbers. People from all walks of life joined Gandhi, drawn by his philosophy of non-violent resistance. They walked through scorching heat, dusty roads, and rural villages, spreading the message of swaraj (self-rule) and civil disobedience. The marchers sang songs, chanted slogans, and held meetings, inspiring thousands to join the freedom struggle. The British tried to intimidate them, but Gandhi remained steadfast. On April 5, they reached the banks of the Sabarmati River, where Gandhi famously declared, "With this salt, I shake the foundations of the British Empire!"

  • On April 6, 1930, Gandhi and his followers reached Dandi. They produced salt illegally, sparking a wave of protests across India. The British arrested Gandhi, but the march had already achieved its goal. The Dandi March drew global attention, exposing British tyranny and galvanizing India's struggle for independence. The march became a symbol of resistance, inspiring movements worldwide. Gandhi's leadership and the people's courage paved the way for India's eventual freedom in 1947. The Dandi March remains an iconic event in Indian history, a testament to the power of non-violent resistance and the unbreakable human spirit.
