- Why do we have to go?
- My cool American cousin, with her jean shorts that are purposefully ripped, her sequined T-shirt, and pale pink lipgloss, the more I want her to like me.
- I walk across the classroom and I feel everyone’s eyes on me.
- A girl named Jude has to move away from her home because there is too much violence. She moves to the U.S. with her mother, leaving her father and brother behind.
- Jude and her mom move in with her uncle and his family. Jude is already overwhelmed by the U.S. and all she wants is to go back home to her family.
- Look at you, Jude, habibti you look so grown up!
- Jude joins school during the second semester. She feels very alone at first, like an outcast between the people.
- Jude learns that there will be a school play of Beauty and the beast and she wants to try out. She has to go up against her cousin, who seems to not like her very much. Jude also gets to the point in her life where she gets to wear the hijab.
- Jude’s father FaceTimes them and gets to see Jude in her new hijab. Then at school she finds out that she has been cast in her school’s play, as plumette the feather duster.Many people make rude comments about her hijab, but it doesn’t sway her at all.
- Jude’s little sister is born and her father gets to see her on a FaceTime call. On that same FaceTime Jude’s dad tells them some very good news, Jude’s brother is back! Then she finally gets to preforms in the play.
