  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme : Fear and Suspicion are destructive" by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. For example, when all the residents of maple street are questioning Les Goodman. This piece of evidence supports the theme by showing that since everyone in Maple Street is afraid of the unknown reason that there's no power. As soon as Les Goodman's car turns on the neighbor's fear started destroying their friendship with Les Goodman when they start questioning him about how strange he and his family can be. The next piece of evidence that supports my theme is when Charlie shoots Pete Van horn. This scene supports the theme by showing how Charlie and all the residents were so fearful. That without warning or questions the fear Charlie had made him completely ruin/destroy Pete Van horn's life. By shooting Pete Van Horn Charlie destroyed a life because of his suspicion that the dark figure was a alien or something worse. My last piece of evidence is how the aliens talked about how the humans will destroy themselves. This scene supports my theme by showing how the residents will start to suspect or question each other when the power goes off and other odd things happen. As the residents turn to violence because of their fears, aliens watch them destroy their lives and relationships because of fear and suspicion towards each other.
