The British merchants took control of the Fur Trade networks out of Montreal. Britain became the master of the Fur Trade North America after it took control of New France in the 1760's.

During the final phase of the Fur Trade, HBC lost a court case independent traders. Britain was worried Americans would use economic connections to gain control of Rupert's Land.
