besides of being a tourist destination San Francisco's Chinatown. Waverly is a Chinese American girl and her mother is an immigrant born in China, they never left San francsico except to go to chess tournaments.

When Waverly learns how to play chess she starts competing in a lot of chess competition, and she endure her mom showing her off.

After blowing her stack at mom and Waverly runs away, the joke's on her, however since she's nine years old and can't really go anywhere except the alley.
Waverly decides there is nowhere else to go so she decides to go home and apologize to her mom.
Weverly gets home and realizes that her mom is beating her in a of chess that is in her mind and she is pondering her next move.
