  • YOU!!! Will kill your father and MARRY YOUR MOTHER!!
  • I must flee.....
  • hehe...
  • Oedipus was born of Queen Jocasta and King Laius. Even as a baby he was a threat to the king and queen, becuuse the king had been told that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. So, in order to prevent the prophecy from unfolding, King Laius has his servant carry out the awful deed of hanging him from a tree by his feet and leaving him to be eaten. But, the servent could not go through with it, so he gave the boy to a shepherd.
  • “What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three at night?
  • The shepherd gave him to the King of Corinth, who Oedipus grew up believing was his father. So, when an oracle told him the same prophecy that his father had been told when he was a baby, he decided to flee his father's kingdom in fear of committing an awful act.
  • On his journey from the kingdom, a lord that just so happened to be his father, got in his way, and in self-defence, Oedipus killed him and his servants, all except for one.
  • Oedipus felt a great thrill at the forefront of this amazing defeat, so he took his intelligence to another level and tried to defeat a Sphinx that was plaguing Thebes, and ended up solving her riddle and becoming king of Thebes.
  • With this second brilliant defeat came the marriage of the widowed queen (his real mother) and together they had four children, the eldest being Antigone. Without even the slightest idea of what he had done, Oedipus had fulfilled his unwanted prohecy. Running away from his fate could not save him after all.
  • Eventually, in his quest to find the truth about a curse on his kingdom, he found out that HE was the curse. That his fate had been fulfilled and his life had been ruined. He cut out his eyes and Queen Jocasta hung herself. He was ordered to be exiled because HE ended up being the reason for the plague on Thebe. So, Antigone and his other daughter leave to guide him through his wandering of the earth.
