During the 1990s there was a family, the Martinezs who lived in Medellin. It is a city in Colombia and was one of the most insecure and unsustainable cities in the world.
Their home was in Comuna 13, the poorest region in the city. Acacia, the girl of the family, was suffering from cholera, a disease her father died from. This happened people didn't have access to clean water and were drinking from contaminated streams.
Another factor that made Medellin unsafe was that there were drug many activities, for example the city had 60% of the world's cocaine. Mrs. Martinez was concerned about the environment her daughter was exposed too.
But, by the end of the decade there were some improvements in Medellin regarding its sustainability. Many public spaces were created such as parks and Acacia and her mother had access to clean water. This was the beginning of Colombia's journey into becoming one of the most sustainable countries in South America
Also there are projects such as “office building Antejardin”. This building had tropical plants on balconies increasing the natural components in the city. At last, the sun has set in the city of Medellin and the future is bright for the Martinez family.
