- In the living room the voice sang, Tick-Tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o'clock! As if it were afraid that nobody would.

- PersonificationThe clock in the story is described as singing Tick-Tock and feeling scared, degraded, and sorry because nobody is in the house. This personification helps show the clock's emotion and loneliness of the empty house
- It is time to serve breakfast, and important announcement of today.
- The house is making breakfast and announcing the homes relevant information as per daily routine. Even though there is nobody in the house the house is oblivious of this information.
- Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven -nine! Today is august 4th, 2026, in the city of Allendale California.
- The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles. The face of the house was all charred except for the silhouettes of a man, woman, girl, and a boy. By observing, it is obvious that some kind of explosion killed all the humans.
