Storyboard Text

  • Atticus arrived at the courthouse early in the morning. He is supposed to choose the members of the jury for Tom Robinson's trial.
  • Jem, Scout, and Dill couldn't find anywhere to sit downstairs. Reverend Skyes ended up finding them a seat in the colored balcony section.
  • Atticus questioned Bob Ewell asking what his dominant hand was. He responded saying he could use one hand as good as the other.
  • Mayella Violet Ewell had been called to the witness stand. She then gave her full testimony that seemed to have matched both Heck Tate's and Bob Ewell's testimony.
  • Atticus then asked Mayella if she remembered Tom hitting her and she said, "No, I don't recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me."(Chapter 18)
  • Mayella proceeded to give an in detail description on how Tom hit her and other details that she didn't remember a few minutes ago. When Atticus pointed this out she then began to call everyone cowards for not doing anything about Tom taking advantage of her.
  • After recess Tom Robinson was called to the witness stand. Atticus asked him a few questions on how he aquainted with Mayella and how he passed her house everyday to and from the field he works at.
  • Tom then further explained how Mayella would ask him to come inside the house to fix things around the house. He also said that he refused to get paid for his services.
  • Atticus asked Tom, what happened to you on the evening of November twenty-first of last year. He then began to explain how the incident unwhined.

  • Tom started to explain how Mayella invited him into the house and how he couldn't find any kindlin' to work on and that the door hinges were fine. Tom started to notice that she was home alone, and she asked him to get a box from on top of the chiffarobe.

  • Tom then said, "Mr. Finch, I got down offa that chair an' turned around an' she sorta jumped on me...She hugged me round the waist."(chapter19) Tom then said he was really scared so he ran away and ran and ran.
  • At the end of the trial Tom Robinson was guilty of raping and assaulting Mayella Violet Ewell, despite Atticus's strong rebuttle towards the charges. Tom Robinson and Atticus were in disbelief, so Atticus quickly left the courtroom.
