- We Roman women had a very limited role in public life. we could not attend, speak in, or vote at political assemblies and we could not hold any position of political responsibility. Typical jobs undertaken by such women were in agriculture, markets, crafts, as midwives, and as wet-nurses.
- What was the role of women?
- They lived in beautiful houses – often on the hills outside Rome, away from the noise and the smell. They enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle with luxurious furnishings, surrounded by servants and slaves to cater to their every desire.

- Slaves were often whipped, branded or cruelly mistreated. Their owners could also kill them for any reason, and would face no punishment.
