- Francie describes the kinds of meals they often make from stale bread in chapter 5. Here is Katie Nolan cutting some bread to make Weg Geschnissen or bread putting. In the right corner of the table, you can see the Fricadellen with tomato sauce and pasta.
- When Papa comes home
- In chapter 6, Francie and Neeley went to the butcher to get some meat. The butcher was getting very angry with them because they always wanted something else. They wanted him to grind the meat, chop up an onion into it, etc. and the butcher was not very happy about this. They also had refused to take the 'just ground' meat he had offered them because they couldn't trust that it had been just ground.
- On Saturday evening, Maudie and Francie went to confession. This is something that everyone did every Saturday. There are always long lines, but the longest line is outside Father O'Flynn's cubicle, as he was kind and didn't give a lot of penances.
- At two in the morning, when papa comes home from working at a wedding, the whole family gathers around the table to share the leftover food Papa brought. Behind Katie, you can see the chairs that Francie set up by the window to watch the people outside, because on Saturday's she was allowed to sleep in the front room.
