- after multiple defeats, the Americans camped outside the city in winter during this time the army suffered an economic sippy crisis but most were well-fed

- on February third 1778 baron Fredrick von Steuben arrived at the encampment recruited by the Americans in france. though he spoke no English he commented his program drilling the soilders and improving the encampments sanitary needs
