Hercules was sent to kill a beast in the area of Nemea, he managed to kill him after many tries. Finally he choked him to death but lost a finger in the process. He used the lion skin as armour and his head as a helmet.
The Stymphalian Birds
The hydra lived in the swamps of Lerna and was said to have eight or nine heads. Hercules tried killing alone but was almost eaten by the hydra until he called for his nephew Lolaus who helped burn the wounds while Hercules cut out the hydra’s heads.
The Cattle of Geryon
Hercules mission was to bring an enormous boar back to Eurystheus alive. He managed to do it after driving the boar into a snowbank and he flipped it on his shoulder and carried him back home alive.
The Mares of Diomedes
Hercules had to kill birds that feasted on human flesh. In order to take them down, he made a racket of castanets given to him by the goddess of Athena. Once the birds were in the air, he took them down with his arrows.
Hercules tenth labour was to steal famous cattle from Geryon, he managed to do it by killing the owner’s dog with his wooden club. Geryon was dispatched and so Hercules drove the herd back to Greece, passing through Italy.
Hercules eighth labour was to capture the Mares of Diomedes, horses that fed on travellers flesh. Hercules managed to round them up and herded them down to sea. He showed them to Eurystheus before releasing them again. Stories say they were eaten by wild animals on Mount Olympus.
