- In this scene, of the book Hatchet Brian finds some berries, but he encounters a bear. The bear wants some berries too. This takes place in Chapter 7
- Slide: 2
- In this scene Brian has found a way to make a fire. While he was fighting a porcupine, he threw his hatchet and missed the animal, but the hatchet flew into a rock and made a spark of fire. Brian that does this again and makes a fire. This takes place in Chapter 9.

- In this scene, Brian survives a plane crash in chapter 2 of the book. He wakes up in a haze, remembers the pilot's fate, and faces painful mosquito bites. Despite the trauma, Brian manages to crawl inland from the shore and turn the experience into a positive learning moment. This takes place in Chapter 2.
- Slide: 4
- In this scene A young girl, Nya spends much of her waking life walking to and from a large pond, miles away from her family's village. She collects water from the pond into a gourd, balances the gourd on her head, and walks home, where she immediately deposits the water, turns back, and does it all over again.
- Slide: 5
- When Nya stepped on a thorn, she pierced her foot. She endured physical pain for the sake of her chores, which involved going to a different location.
