  • Elizabeth I dies and James I takes control of the throne. James believed in Divine Rights of Kings. Which starts to make Parliament mad with issues like religion, money & power.
  • Please restore our monarchy
  • Didn't they just kill my father...
  • James I dies and his son Charles I takes the throne. Charles also believes in Divine Rights of Kings. Charles continues to make problems. Parliament makes a petition to limit kings power. Charles signs the petition but later ignores it. This issue starts a civil war. Supporters of the king ( Cavaliers) vs Parliament( rounds heads). Parliaments leader was Oliver Cromwell.

  • Parliament wins the war. They purge all supporters of the king and behead Charles I in public. Parliament abolishes monarchy and Cromwell sets a military dictatorship. Cromwell then dies and leaves English army to restore the monachy.
  • Bill Of Rights
  • Parliament asks Charles I son to be king. Charles II did not believe in Divine Rights of kings and did not threatens Parliament authority. Charles II worked with Parliament and did good things. Charles II has no heir so when he dies the crown goes to his brother James II. But parliament is worried because James II is openly catholic.
  • James II wife has a baby boy. Parliaments fear for having another Catholic King is high. Parliament came to the decision to invite William Orange ( Ruler Of Netherlands) to invade and take over. This action starts a revolutionary war. James II realized he had little to non supporters and fled to France. The war had almost 0 bloodshed. Also Williams wife as Mary who was James II's daughter.
  • Parliament asked William and Mary to throne/rule. They accepted and took throne in 1689. William and Parliament worked together in creating the first Bill of Rights. This laid the foundation for a constitutional monarchy. Also together parliament and William destroyed the theory of Divine Right of Kings.
