Love cannot sustain a starving man. This shows that love cannot be obtained through food or drink. The man is stuck choosing between food and water and love. He can only choose one. If he chooses food and water he will not have love. If he chooses love he will die. It is important because if a man is starving, food is the answer not love.
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Love cannot heal all physical wounds. This slide shows that the man has a broken leg. He is stuck choosing between going to the hospital or love. If he goes to the hospital he will set his fractured bone. If he chooses love his bone will stay broken. This is important because the man will be unable to walk if he does not choose the hospital.
An extended metaphor is shown in this sonnet. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that is shown throughout the entire sonnet. This is actually the same for many sonnets and poems. Sometimes the entire poem/sonnet is one big metaphor. The purpose of extended metaphors is to give the sonnet or poem a deeper meaning without giving the meaning up using simple words. An example of an extended metaphor would be "or trade the memory for food" (13). Even though it doesn't directly say what it means, the reader gets a deeper more emotional meaning than just saying that the author might rather have food than love. Using extended metaphors can further deepen the meaning to a sonnet/poem.
The Turn shown in lines 13 and 14 changes the path of the sonnet. Before the Turn the author makes it known that love cannot be obtained by any physical means. The author says that love is not food or drink, shelter, or a cure. Love also cannot heal broken bones and because of this people are dying. People are dying because they are choosing love over their well-being. Before the Turn the author makes it seem as if choosing love is a bad thing and that choosing love means nothing good. But after the Turn, the tone changes completely. In the few lines before the Turn, the author starts changing their view on love and decides that even though it might not heal you or help you physically it's still something they want. During the Turn, the author says that they after all the things that they could do rather than love, they still choose love. This all shows that this is in fact a love poem.
Even if he is doubting his relationship and even if he is hindering his health he will still choose love. This shows that the man is not willing to give up on love. It says "trade the memory of this night for food." this means that even if he is starving he will still choose his love. By saying this the author is saying the man could leave behind the memory of his love to instead keep him from starving. The author is saying that the man would rather keep a memory and starve than lose memory and eat. And yet, he continues to strive for love.
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. I do not think I would.
Again, even if he is doubting his relationship and even if he is hindering his health he will still choose love. When the author says "I do not think I would." It means that they would never trade anything for love. When the authors say that they mean that after everything that the man could have, he still would choose love. He would rather hurt his health than lose his love. The theme of this sonnet is that love can't be everything. Love cannot fulfill your physical needs.
