In The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling,one of the main themes is Humanity is its own worst enemy.The theme on its own makes it clear what it suggest throughout the story as we see neighbor to neighbor accuse each other of the weird things happening. And he never did come out to look at that thing that flew overhead.He wasn't even interested.Why?Why didn't he come out with the rest of us to look (pg.76).On page 76 we see Don start to brew answers and weird questions about Les and soon the rest of the residents start to agree with Dons comment leading to everyone believing Les is the monster over his car starting. You best watch yourself Steve!Until we get this all straightened out you ain't exactly above suspicion yourself (pg.81).Then again on page 81 we see Charlie try to stir the residents away from Les and focuse on weird things Charlie's been doing and eventually this also angers Steve leading to more false accusation and violence. among the residents. with few variations.They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find...and it's themselves.And all we have to do is sit back....and watch (Pg.86).Slowly us the readers realize this is the same cycle that happens within humanity.On page 86 aliens who are anything but human also begin to realize giving us a more open perspective of who the real monster has been.In short,the theme for The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street is obviously Humanity is it's own worst enemy.
