Sofia watching how her mother wakes up early to make her bean tacos.
Mama wakes up every morning at 5AM to make me bean tacos for my school lunch. she rolled out one tortilla at a time untilshe had a big stack of them, she'd fill each with beans that she'd fried in bacon grease and flavored in onion in her huge cast-iron skillet.
I loved tacos, but i didn't want to take them to school
Sofia thinking about the bullying happening to Mexican Americans at her school and how she loved tacos but didn't wanna stand out and be targeted for all the bullying.
I didn't want to take them for lunch because some kids called Mexican Americans beaners and the last i needed was to stand out like a big stupid sign.
Sofia asking her mother everyday if she could take lunch money or a sandwich to school instead of tacos and her mother not knowing about the bullying and discrimination happening at school so she answers with "why mija".
Why mija? you already have these delicious tacos to eat.
Mama, can i please have some lunch money too, or a sandwich instead?
