One Major theme in "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is that mankind is its own worst enemy. The first evidence is that the residents of Maple Street are suspicious of Goodman because of his car starting up and him looking up at the sky in the wee hours of morning (pages 76-77). This supports the theme because people are suspicious of Goodman and turn against him and end up spying on him even if he was a trusted neighbor for five years (page 80). The second piece of evidence is when the group of people start to accuse each other, wanting to find a scapegoat, then chaos and violence erupts (page 85). This supports the theme because they are all suspicious of themselves and turn against each other with violence. They were all neighbors in one town and now are all enemies with each other. The last piece of evidence is a quote from the story: "They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find, and it's themselves," Figure 1, page 86. This supports the theme because what the figure said has the same meaning as the theme. The enemy they find is themselves is referring to mankind being its own enemy. In conclusion, mankind is its own worst enemy is one of the many themes in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."
