- Get up and work! Or I will whip you!
- I will take the whipping. Anything is better than getting up right now.

- Event 3: Protective Root?
- How is this root supposed to help me? Its a root. I'll take it anyway, it's worth a try.
- Here is this root. It will protect you, and no one will whip you.
- Douglass is worked very hard by Covey and is beaten often. Covey was known for “breaking slaves”, and he often whipped Fredrick Douglass.
- Climax: The Fight With Covey
- I am determined to be treated as an equal and a human being. I will not be whipped again.
- Hughes! Come help!
- Douglass gets sick while working and gets hit by Covey for not working.
- Resolution: Never Again
- I'm not scared of him.
- Douglass. I'm not going to bother with him...
- Douglass’s friend, Sandy Jenkins, gives him a root that is supposed to help him to not get whipped anymore, and to protect him.
- Thanks...
- After Douglass returns, Covey tackles him in the loft and Douglass fights back, because he is determined to not be whipped anymore.
- Covey is scared of Douglass and so he is now determined to never be whipped again.
