  • Let's get to work cleaning up all this litter!!
  • Thank you all for coming! This community garden will be a huge success
  • it's getting too difficult! I just need a day off or something
  • I gotchu
  • Carol and her newly engaged personal circle begin to move beyond the platform, taking sporadic weekend trips to volunteer with climate organizations and bring the kids along for a fun day of civically minded bonding. Through the combination of this platform and her friend-group, Carol has now built the momentum necessary not only to engage, but to stay engaged in this issues she cares about. Carol is heartened by these developments. She has gained more civic agency, a new group of friends, and a broader range of leisure activities, both alone and with her children.
  • teamwork makes the dream work!!
  • Carol realizes that she is the key friend in this group. She brought together members of her own network, from work and her social circle, and is thusly the central person to initiate meet-ups, start conversations, and organize particular action. She knows this is unsustainable for her, given her other commitments, and she seeks to diffuse her influence in the group.
  • Alright, I'm ready to get back to work
  • Her influence on the group begins to become a stressor for Carol. She confides in her close friend Sheila about this anxiety, and Sheila understands completely. Frankly, she was impressed that Carol had been so energetic and active this whole time. Sheila has a bit less on her plate, as an older empty-nester, and agrees to help Carol diffuse her role in the group.
  • Glad you could make it to this important referendum vote!!
  • Sheila becomes more active in initiating meet-ups, etc. and the group holds together, more or less. They are even able to attract new recurring members from Sheila’s church group and even a handful of high school students based on Sheila’s connection to a local school board. The group is now larger, more diffused, but still retains a community feel. Carol takes a two-week break from the platform that started it all and focuses on rejuvinating herself.
  • When those two weeks have passed, Carol is back and better than ever. She is so happy to see her friends again, especially in light of a new bill that has been introduced which might ban polystyrene completely from the state. Carol is excited that she can be a part of this network she had a hand in creating and that they can create something so beautiful in their own community.
  • Carol has created a new normal for herself, where civic engagement fits into her daily life in a meaningful way, and she feels more agency within her community. Learning more about the legislative process has brought up as many ugly truths as beautiful hopes, but she feels energized by the progress she has made and continues to advocate for within her network and her community. She knows there is more to be done, but she feels better equipped to do it now.
