  • (Kyndal Glaub P: 3) 1:Population
  • 2: Genetic Variation
  • 2: Overproduction of Offspring
  • Green and brown frogs are all over the McDonald's Farm. Their different color skin show natural variation in the population. They live with huge animals like cows and albino giraffes. These large animals have a hard time seeing the little frogs around the enclosure.
  • 4: Competition & Natural Selection
  • Genetic variation gives some of the frogs different characteristics. The main one is their skin color, some are green and bright while others are dark and brown. Genetic variation is the genes creating different individuals in the same population.
  • 5: Adaptation
  • During the Spring season, all the frogs start to reproduce. There are way too many frogs in one area of the farm. Some of the frogs need to die off because there is not enough food, land, or protection for them.
  • Evolution Has Occured
  • In the spring, rain comes down at the farm and there are a lot more mud puddles around. The brown frogs blend in and the green ones stick out. This causes the brown frogs to get stepped on by the giraffe and cow. The brown frogs survive less than the green.
  • Green skinned frogs are more likely to survive and create more off spring. After many spring seasons, this left the population of frogs more likely to be green than brown. The frogs now carry traits for green skin so they can adapt to their environment.
  • Evolution can happen quickly or slowly in an environment depending on the size of change and genetics in population. The genetic differences can include a short/long tail, light/dark fur, short/long back legs, big/small ears etc. In this environment specifically, the green frogs are the dominant and survive the best in the muddy environment. Being green allows them to be seen in the mud and not get stepped on.
