  • Overproduction
  • Variation
  • Environment
  • Overproduction is when more snake offspring are produced than can possibly survive. Not all coral snakes reach adulthood before dying or being eaten.
  • Struggle
  • There are two variations of the coral snake. There are vibrant colored scales and dull colored scales.
  • Selection
  • Birds of prey inhabit the same forested areas as coral snakes. Birds of prey are predators of coral snakes.
  • Differential Reproduction
  • Coral snakes are competing and struggling to eat, find shelter, and mate. Another struggle is not being eaten by the birds of prey.
  • Different variations are selected "for" and "against." The vibrancy of the scales is selected for because, in nature, bright colors represent strength and poison. However, dull colors aren't seen as strong or dangerous. This means they will be selected against, as they are most likely to be eaten first. The vibrant scales allow for those coral snakes to not be eaten.
  • After many generations, the population of dull-colored snakes decreases due to evolution and natural selection, leaving a greater amount of vibrant coral snakes.
