  • Motivations:Keeping his reputationHelping Betty get betterHis money/powerBehaviors:Very self-centered; wants to have a clean reputationBrought in other people to help with the witchtrials/to get rid of the DevilDoesn't like anyone who dislikes him or has different ideas (reputation and power)Consequences:Many people don't like him (like Proctor) because of his selfishnessHe is very well known because of his job, and respected by a lot of people
  • Expectations: Keep telling Hale who else is doing witchcraftResponsibility:Find the witches in SalemQuote"...And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shuder you...I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down." This quote shows Abigail's manipulative personality and how she acts towards other people in order to gain power.
  • Expectations: Take care of his familyBe a good Christian man/follow the rulesResponsibility:Take care of his land (farming)Care for his wifeQuote:"Why do you never wonder if Parris be innocent, or Abigail? Is the accuser always holy now? Were they born this morning as clean as God's fingers? I'll tell you what's walking Salem--vengeance is walking Salem." This quote shows how Proctor does not believe what the rest of Salem believes, and shows that he will not be swayed in his opinion just becuase of what other people say. He is also pretty much the only person in the play who questions what is going on with all of the accusations, which is shown in this quote, and shows how he is different.
  • Expectations: He is expected to be a good example as a Christian manExplain what is happening with the witchcraft; help ease the fearResponsibility:Is the minister in Salem; has to preach every SundayHas to keep up his reputation as a minister (or at least wants to)Has to take care of Betty and AbigailQuote:"Now look you, child, your punishment will come in its time. But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it." This quote shows Parris's personality, because even when other people could potentially be in danger because of what happened in the woods, he is only wanting to know the truth becuase it could hurt his reputation. This proves that he is a very selfish person.
