  • The Story of Lake Victoria By: Massimo Porco
  • I will be telling you about the Story of Lake Victoria!
  • Lake Victoria had a lot of Cichlids in their water. The Cichlid population took up more than 80 percent of the lake at the time. Europeans started settling by Lake Victoria and started fishing the Cichlids.
  • With the Europeans settling by Lake Victoria, the demand for the Cichlids grew. With the demand of the Cichlids, more efficient European=style nets caused the species to collapse.
  • In response to the collapse, the British introduced a fish called the Nile Perch to the Lake. For 25 years the impact of the Nile Perch wasn't a big difference. The Cichlids still made up 80 percent of the Lake and the Nile Perch was only at 2 percent.
  • Suddenly a change occurred and within 2 years the Cichlid population dropped to 2 percent of the lake's population. The Nile Perch fish increased to 80 percent. 200 species of the Cichlids were completely wiped from the lake entirely.
  • Later Lake Victoria had an even bigger problem than the overabundant of Nile Perch fish. Mats of blue-green algae spread through Lake Victoria. The algae eat plant nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. Soon the plant nutrients in lake increased, so did the algae. The Cichlids ate the algae but not enough of the Cichlids were alive to keep it under control. The Nile Perch ate most of the Cichlids.
