  • BACKGROUND:Change BlindnessInattention BlindnessFocused Visual
  • To investigate the influence of several factors on inattention blindness. The factors were: 1. The effect of superposition compared to live events within the video.2. The impact of the difficulty of the task.3. The impact of the unusualness of the unexpected event.
  • Opportunity Sample- 228 participants - Harvard University undergraduates - some were rewarded with candy and some were given a small amount of money and some received no payment.Data from 36 students was disregarded resulting in 192 participants equally distributed amongst the 16 conditions.Laboratory experiment using an independent measures design.
  • Independent Variables- (1) transparent or opaque video (2) black or white teams (3) easy or difficult task (4) gorilla or the umbrella womanDependant Variables- number of participants who noticed the unexpected conditionsControlled Variables- same number of passes, same models, same time span before unexpected event occurred
  • PROCEDURE : Participants were tested individually. instructions that were given were to watch a team black or white + count passes. easy task= mental note of passes or difficult= aerial and bounce passes. they recorded the scores down on paper after the video was finished.
  • They were then asked the following questions:1. While you were doing the counting, did you notice anything unusual in the video?2. Did you notice anything other than the six players?3. Did you see anyone else appear on the video?4. Did you see a gorilla/woman carrying an umbrella walk across the scene?
