  • Extended families where the first type of community to develop in africa. An extended family had around 15-20 members. Extended families worked together to clear fields, plant seeds, and harvest crops. A male elder would make the decisions for the community. These extended families produced almost everything they needed. What they could not produce they traded with other extended families. In this picture someone from a different extended family has come to trade with them.
  • Villages were the second type of community to develop in Africa.Villages formed from multiple extended families for needed help from one another, like to control a flooding river or to mine for gold and iron. In this picture the people farming , mining for gold and iron, and controlling a flooding river by blocking it up with sand. Villages usually had around 100-200 people. Villages had a leader chosen for wisdom and strength.
  • Cities where the third type of community to develop in Africa. Cities formed from villages as people starrted mining for Iron. Iron tools people made from mining iron made farming more efficient which led to a surplus of crops. Because of all the crops, not everyone had to farm which led to specialization of craft. Because of the specialized crafts, people traded with one another. With people trading with one another trading cites got wealthy which expanded the area due to more opportunities which expanded the area even more. Cities along rivers (as in this pitcture) had easier ways to trade which led to them being more wealthy and expanding more.
