  • Sorry Mehri but you have to go.
  • We are delighted to have her work for us.
  • No mum, please don't make me go!
  • Slide: 3
  • In my new family I had a little sister. Her name was Marji. My new life with a rich family was a very comfortable life style, although after all I was just a maid.
  • Oh okay then, just for you Marji.
  • Come on Mehri, Can we play hide and seek?

  • I started to fall madly in love with Hossine at the beginning of the revolution when i was just 16 years old. Here I am trying to look my best as I can see Hossine in the window.
  • Look at Hossine, he is so handsome.
  • sis, can you help me tie my shoes, pleaseee.

  • Even though I lived in a rich household, I knew deep down that I was still a peasant that couldn't read or write.
  • Yeah sis, of course I'll try my best.
  • Hey Marji, I have a favour to ask. I know you're only young and don't know too much yet, but could you write a letter to Hossine for me and put it in my name?
  • Slide: 6
  • After working for the Satrapis for years, I hadn't seen my real sister for a long time. I told her about my boyfriend.
  • Yeah sis, I have been. Mum and dad shipped me off too. Cool to hear that you have a boyfriend!
  • Hey sis, Long time no see. I heard that your working for Marji's uncle. Is that for real? I have a new boyfriend now. His name is Hossine.
  • Slide: 7
  • This is Marji reading to me Hossine's letters that he wrote. I wish I could read them myself but this will do for the time being.
  • He is so sweet. I can't wait to one day marry him.
  • Dear Mehri, oh how much I adore you. My favourite part of the day is when we talk through the windows.
  • Hossine

  • After a few visits, my sister starts to fall for Hossine too!
  • I guess you could say that?
  • Hossine really is cute isn't he? I adore him.

  • My sister was so jealous that she told Marji's uncle that I was in love with Hossine. Eventually Marji's dad found out and was not happy.
  • I can't believe my own sister would betray me!
  • Slide: 11
  • Marji's dad was very angry. He wanted to get a hold of Hossine as soon as possible.
  • Hello, I would like to have a word with your son Hossine.
  • Who's speaking?
  • Slide: 12
  • Hossine agreed to come outside and have a talk to Marji's dad.
  • Seriously? This is absurd. I could never be seen with a maid.
  • Hossine, I am going to get straight to the point here. Mehri is pretending to be my daughter but in fact she is my maid.
  • Slide: 13
  • Marji's father and Hossine have a serious talk and Hossine debates whether to continue seeing Mehri.
  • ermmmm...
  • I understand that this is a terrible situation. Do you still want to be with her?

  • Hossine chose to break up with me, handing over all of our letters.
  • Here are the letters, I am breaking up with Mehri. Im quite sure to end it.
  • Okay, good decision. Wait, this is Marji's handwriting
  • letters
  • Slide: 15
  • Marji's dad confronted Marji about the letters.
  • Dad, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to make you angry. I was just trying to help out Mehri!
  • MARJI, WHAT ARE THESE LETTERS! WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME ANYTHING.
  • Slide: 16
  • Marji's dad explained to her what I knew all along. We could never be together because we are from a different social class.
  • Marji, in Iran we must stay in our own social class. It doesn't matter how much you love someone.
  • Thats so unfair! Who's side are you even on here?
  • Slide: 17
  • The Satrapi's had never made me feel like a second class citizen. But it changed today. At least Marji tried to understand.
  • I'm so sorry Marji, I didn't mean to get you in trouble. You are so kind and beautiful. Just like a sister.
  • It's ok Mehri. I know you can't help the way you were born. Now I can see why we need the revolution.
  • Slide: 18
  • I've realised I'm different but it doesn't make it right for me to be belittled. I want to fight for change and stand up for my rights. LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC!
  • I believed in the revolution helping women like me. Boy was I wrong!
