  • In the Vanishing Half, Desiree speaks on how Mallard is like a prison. Bennet states, "I don't care how many toilets I got to jump in," she said."I ain't going back to Mallard" (Bennett 63). Desiree hated Mallard due to the racism and colorist in the town along with her mother forcing her to drop out of school. Desiree wanted to prove to herself that she can be independent and convinced herself that she was the one in the drivers seat.

  • Desiree running away from Mallard is the most important decision in her life. The text states, "But Desiree had always fantasized about life outside of this little farm town" (Bennett 8). Desiree has always been the rebellious and less studious one between the twins. Desiree would finally see the real world, and the fact that her dreams are not so easily attainable. This decision to runaway would shape her new identity and escape the colorism of Mallrad.

  • Sam had a huge influence on Desiree's mentality. Bennet exclaims, "The same person who'd love her after her sister abandoned her and her mother refused her phone calls" (Bennett 30). Sam was Desiree' way to fill in the void that was lost when she left her mother and when Stella left to pass as white. When Sam turned violent and threatening, she felt as though she lost her last source of reliance. Desiree has always relied on another person, and when Sam started being abusive, she no one else to go to but the mother she left years ago.
