  • I totally forgot that was today...
  • Scene 1: Connections
  • Alright mom
  • Preston, tonight is the party with your father's law firm coworkers. I picked out a tuxedo that will impress all of the ladies!
  • Scene 2: Choose Your Words Wisely
  • Hmm this party might not be too bad.. I will introduce myself to a couple of lawyers who seem approachable. Then, I will ask them about their career and how they ended up being a lawyer.
  • Very pleased to meet you Mr. Whitlock, my name is Preston and I am a first year law student at NYU School of Law. I look forward to talking to you about your law career!
  • Scene 3: Impressions are Key
  • Ah, you must be Mr. Hart's son! Nice to meet you, Preston. Let's have a chat later.
  • Preston is a first year law student at the NYU School of Law. He hopes to follow his father's path and open his own law firm in the Big Apple. Upon his invitation to his father's party with many successful lawyers, Preston hopes to engage in impression management by asking impressive questions about the profession.
  • Scene 4: Expand Your Network
  • I've heard many good things about you! Here's my business card if you ever have any questions or would like a letter of recommendation.
  • Thank you so much, Mrs. Lee!
  • Preston is practicing his lines for the party by engaging in Erving Goffman's idea of symbolic interactionism, dramaturgical analysis. He will be role-playing a brilliant and eager law student by using a set of memorized questions and aiming to present himself in the best possible light while he is in "front stage".
  • Scene 5: Find the Secret to Success
  • What is your secret to success as a highly respected attorney?
  • Just like you, I attended NYU School of Law and during that time I made many connections with lawyers in different law firms! I built a strong bond with individuals in the same area of practice.
  • Preston's first good impression is an example of cultural capital. By using tasteful language, he portrays himself as an enthusiastic law student. This first step in making connections will influence one's career in the future as it can determine who receives a job interview. Along with talent, effort, and skills, culture and connections are also crucial components to have.
  • Scene 6: Leave with a Lasting Impression
  • Later at the party...
  • It was a pleasure to meet you Mr. Whitlock. Thank you for taking the time to provide advice and I look forward to meeting you again!
  • Of course Preston, feel free to contact me in the future if you would like to be an intern at my law firm.
  • How important is it to have many connections or networks? Along with good impressions, expanding your network and meeting new people will increase one's chance of success. Expanding one's network will build trust and respect with individuals in your field of interest. It also opens door to many opportunities that can greatly influence one's experience in their career.
  • Do people with the same amount of human capital receive the same economic rewards? In most cases, there are various economic rewards despite having the same human capital. In the legal profession, individuals with the same human capital investment may have different economic rewards due to differences in the amount of social capital. Hence, it is more than just a law degree that will create high economic success and rather networks and connections that will significantly boost one's career.
  • Does family wealth depend greatly influence economic success? Yes, human, social, and cultural capital is directly and indirectly affected by family wealth and inheritance. Although hard work and natural talent are also significant factors relating to success, being born in a well-off family has huge advantages. Like Preston, many wealthy individuals are able to receive high quality education and many connections that will help them secure a job in the future.
