Storyboard Text

  • Nadia stood on the side of the road awaiting the bus that would hopefully take her to her future.
  • Nadia had recently applied to be a teacher in a local public school in Nijran
  • Although the school was almost 45 minutes away from her country-side home, Nadia had to either us public transportation or get a male relative to drive her.
  • Omar, the schools principle, explained to Nadia that she would be the school's music teacher.
  • Hello Mrs. Nadia!
  • Hello class! My name is Mrs. Lizet but feel free to call me Nadia
  • While the rest of the class went outside for their recess, one of the students, Sarah, stayed in to talk to Nadia.
  • Since you are the new music teacher, I wanted to show you something.
  • I would love to!!
  • I've been trying to learn the piano lately and I was wondering if you'd help me learn?
  • Little did Sarah know that when Nadia was a little girl, she had an old, small piano in her attic. She would spend hours every day trying to teach herself how to play it.
  • As Nadia got older, she taught herself how to play the piano and this sparked her desire to teach kids music.
  • We can meet after school from now on and I can give you lessons!
  • That would be amazing!
  • Feeling very accomplished with her first day at work, Nadia waits outside of the school for her brother to drive her home.
  • Hi Zain!
  • Hello Nadia!
  • How was your first day of work?
  • Great!
  • The commute sure is long though when I can't drive myself...
  • Nadia and Zain pulled into their family's country-side home.
  • Hello Zain and Nadia.
  • Hi mom and dad!
  • It was great...but could I talk to you about something upstairs.
  • Sure, you sound sad.
  • So I had an amazing first day at work, I met this young lady named Sarah who I am going to continue to help learn piano.
  • So what's the problem?
  • Well until today I had never thought about how I am not allowed to drive... how is it fair when my commute to work would be 20 minutes shorter if I could just drive myself?
  • Nadia's mom explained the history of women's driving rights in Saudi Arabia and Nadia felt sick to her stomach. How come she's educating the next generation of young girls and she can't drive to her job, and they won't be able to drive to theirs?
  • Nadia thought all night about everything. Why couldn't she drive? Where would teaching take her? How could she instill her lover for piano into Sarah?
  • The next day at school, Nadia was sure that Sarah could become a great piano player with the proper instruction.
  • Would you like to come practice on the piano at my house?
  • Yes I would love to!
  • Well, my mother taught me to express my emotions through music, when I was mad or aggravated.
  • So Sarah, where does your passion for playing come from?
  • Kind of like how both of us are capable girls and we are sitting in the back of your brother's car...
  • Sarah whispered to to herself, just loud enough for Nadia to hear...
  • When they arrived at Nadia's house, Nadia introduced Sarah to her mother.
