Princess Sophia of Pensacola, Florida and the Questionable Tap Water
Once upon a time, in the year two thousand and fourteen, there was a young princess named Sophia. She had a bright future that was full of possibilities. This fact was one that her parents would never let her forget. King Boitz was adamant about young Sophia pursuing a career in the politics. However, Sophia had other plans. Specifically, the princess wanted to make the world a better place by not only saving the environment but helping the world understand the environment. Which is why the protesting village people who showed up on the Kingdom door steps intrigued Sophia. The people were worried about the water they were consuming and were blaming the King for allowing such hazardous contaminants be exposed to his people. Sophia was going to get to the bottom of the questionable tap water and ensure her people were not being harmed.

Princess Sophia
If you speak of the enviornment than I truly do understand. From the air to the land to the water we consume; we are all affected
Do you ever wonder about the future of our world? I'm talking about the things that are really important. The health and survival of future generations?
I was on facebook the other day and this article was on my feed that said that Pensacola has the worst tap water in the entire country! Can you believe we've be using this water?!
Jenny: Bestfriend
Carol: Bestfriend
I can't believe that! You'd think that our city would take care of us! What does this mean for our health?!
But what does that really mean? The worst water in the country? Are we being harmed more than the city with the best water in the country? Or is it something else?
Let's take a look at that article...
Hmmm, you know I didn't think about that
The first thing that the girls should do when researching is make sure that the sources they are using are reliable. The information may not be credible.
Look at this article! It was created by the EWG, the Environmental Working Group, if you google them you get some pretty interesting results. Basically they are a group that can be hired to research for businesses. Which could possibly mean that a company hired them to use the information as propaganda.
The conversation with Sophia's friends got her thinking about the quality of water in her kingdom. At this point speculation is all that she has regarding the EWG. So she starts her research and finds that she was wise to question the legitimacy of that particular article. There are many misconceptions regarding tap water. It is not helpful to the public that there is media bias which results in misinformation. She found out, according to the EPA, that "under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), EPA sets legal limits on the levels of certain contaminants in drinking water. The legal limits reflect both the level that protects human health and the level that water systems can achieve using the best available technology. " This means that there are certain amounts of particular contaminants that are perfectly safe to be exposed to. Which ultimately means that as long as amount of contaminants are within legal limits there is nothing to fear. So the question of "best" and "worst" come in to play...
Where do these "contaminants" come from?
So where does our water even come from?
Great questions! Let's research!
First question that people should ask themselves is regarding where their tap water comes from: According to the ECUA, Emerald Coast Utilities Authority, Pensacola's Water "The sources of drinking water for both tap water and bottled water throughout our country include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material. It also can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. "
Interesting so a lot of these contaminants are naturally occurring?!
I wonder if there is anyone we can talk to at the ECUA about our questions?!
Perfect idea! I think that DaIe Perk will be able to provide some helpful informations!
I'll send him an email asking him all of our questions! I think that will be helpful! Going right to the source! Start thinking girls!
I like that idea a lot!
You're right! We should see what we can do to make sure the people know that the water is perfectly safe!
Hey, but there is still another problem. There are a lot of people out there who think that the water here is not safe because it's been labeled as "the worst". What should we do about that?
Mr. Perk provided a lot of useful information. Especially about the act of filtering water! Who would've thought?!
It is the responsibility of our government and city officials to ensure the peace of mind of the people in the face of danger. When this article the EWG posted was reported upon by networks such as WKRG there should've been some communication with elected officials and the ECUA to make sure there wasn't an misunderstandings regarding the safety of the water the citizens use on a daily basis. There were people who only drank bottled water and were unsure about their health becasue they consumed raw tap water. After conducting research and speaking to Dale Perk there was defintly a new understanding for Sophia and her friends. But it's important that her people also knew that there was nothing to fear.
I think that the best way to make sure the people are happy is by having a press conference or a town meeting with them. We can also talk to PNJ and WKRG about writing an article to explain the situation.
The girls go to the local drive in to get some great food and talk about the next steps.

People of Pensacola, I asked you here today so that we could clear up the facts regarding the tap water in our city. After conducting research and speaking to the people at ECUA we've come to the conclusion that our tap water is perfectly safe to drink and your health is not at risk. The article that has spread around is not incorrect, however it it misleading. By referencing "health guidelines" and not "legal limits" they were able to report findings that, at the end of the day, have no effect on the way we are living.
And everyone was happy. The end.
