  • Jean-Jacques Dessalines
  • Everything Starts From Somewhere
  • Slowly but Surely
  • Dessalines is like our ending hero. Like the last runner in the relay race. There are all of the people who worked hard leading up to the final lap, and then the last person runs to the finish line for the most exciting and celebrated finale. After Rochambeau surrenders in the Battle of Vertieres, Dessalines takes charge. In 1804 he says "good riddens" to any French residents left in their home - you go bro! kick them to the curb and reclaim whats yours!...sorry I got a little carried away (haha). Anyway, on January 1, 1804 (mark the holiday ya'll) Dessalines declared the nation independent and renaimed it Haiti!!!
  • August 1791, and the Boise Caiman Ceremony takes place, allowing several aligned groups to finalize their plans for rebellion. It is said that most of their inspiration was actually from the French Revolution, which is funny as now they are going against the French...oh how the tides have turned!!! After the British invaded Saint-Domingue in 1793, the French colonial authorities then issued decrees that certain slaves are freed - which is like limiting your salad topping choices...that is just not okay! - everyone should be equal and have the same rights. Believing the same, L'Overture then rally's everyone up with his very impactful and amazing speech, pushing the revolution on further.
  • L'Overture is the star of the show right now! Like trust me...you should SO wish that you had this mans autograph because he is shaping history's future!!! The British and the Spanish both end their fighting and negotiate peace with L'Overture, but the French are so stubborn that in 1793 Napoleon declares himself "Consul-for-life" in hopes to restore the social conditions and slavery in the colonies. Ugggghhhhh...this man just never gives up!!! (I like my dramatic eye rolls so there is another one here) After a LOT of rebelling and even the "War of Knives" (that alone sounds scary), L'Overture annoumces the new consitution, as Saint-Dominque is not officially declared independent from France but more "self-governing", themselves and is appointed as the Governor-General for life!!! (Finally someone from this colony and someone who is striving for equality is taking control)
  • The time has come and Napoleon is sending Charles Leclerc to retake Saint-Domingue (pretty much making his brother-in-law do all of his "dirty work")…but L'Overture gives in to resolve conflict and agrees to step aside and merge his forces with the French Army...but boy does this backfire because then in 1802 L'Overture is deceived, captured, and imprisoned in France!! But then, Leclerc dies of yellow fever - making a complete plot twist! - and now Rochambeau is the new general! (Uh Oh...this is not looking to good) Rochambeau then takes his advantage and requests to reinstate slavery once again...which is SADLY very good timing because on April 7, 1803, L'Overture dies in Fort de Joux prison in France! (NOOOOOO!!!!) But don't worry because now Dessalines steps in...but is he strong enough to take down Rochambeau...maybe a intense game of rock, paper, scissors with settle it???
  • Our mighty warrior Dessaline proves himself...and in 1803 Rochambeau surrenders to Dessaline after losing the Battle of Vertieres!!! (Yay!) Fast forward and the date is now January 1, 1804 - which is a VERY important date might I add - and Independence is officially announced!!! Dessalines becomes the Governor-General (and then later Emperor Jacques 1 of Haiti) and finally gives their colony a name (drum roll please)...Haiti!!!! All of these amazing people who came together to fight for rights and freedom not only exceeded in ending slavery but also French control over the colony!!! Haiti then established it's first constitution on May 20th, 1805...a day that will always be remembered and glorified!!!! In the words of Toussaint L'Overture, "We are free today because we are the stronger..."
  • Haiti fought hard. They were determined and NEVER backed down. Even when the French attempted to take over the world like MIGHTY THANOS tried against Hercules (and Thanos failed might I add), the Haitians fought and created one of the most successful slave revolts EVER!!! (Round of applause here everybody!!) Not only did Haiti become the 2nd free and independent nation state in the Americas, but they ALSO became the 1st modern nation to be governed of African decent. That's right baby...ring those VICTORY bells!!! The Haitians , more than any other people in the age of revolutions, stood up for the idea that NONE should be slaves or unequal, and that all people who most need the governments protection should be awarded that protection with no judgement or questions asked. ALL LIVES MATTER. your life matters!!! Remember everything that you love and enjoy, but also think about how much others have sacrificed to make sure that you are happy and safe and have freedom. So, make sure to hug tight and always love!!!
