John Proctor makes it to court and tries to help another man named Giles Corey free his wife Martha. The judge is very cruel and refuses the pleas and the petition Giles presents. Abigail and the other girls are also at the court and they start to wail and accuse Giles of being a wizard. He and Martha are found guilty.
John then tries to defend his own wife Elizabeth. He tries to get Mary to help him, but she is afraid and Abigail starts threatening her. Mary sides with Abigail, ignoring John's pleas. Elizabeth is not allowed to talk to John and is forced to leave.
The judge asks John if he is tainted, or having done something unholy. He confesses about his relationship with Abigail, and Abigail gets very sad and upset, knowing this means their relationship is over.
Then Elizabeth comes in. She is not allowed to talk to John and is asked if he did anything wrong. To protect his dignity she lies and said he didn't. She didn't know he had confessed, and when the judge sees that she lied he puts both of them in jail.
It has been two months in jail. Elizabeth has discovered she is pregnant, so she is not going to be executed. She goes to John to try and convince him to plead guilty so he will be free. When they both realize John might die soon, they realize how much they love each other.
The judge comes to John and says if he confesses to being a wizard he won't be executed. They want him to write his name on the paper, and then they will post it around town to humiliate him. He realizes he would rather die with a clear conscience than live a lie. He refuses to sign and dies with his mind clear. THE END!
