- The story has no pause of conflict as the belief in a dream like love is soon ended again and a new conflict is brought upon. Nunkie is a fat girl who works for them. She is often caught flirting with Teacake. Jealously soon becomes a common theme which forshadows the downfall of their relationship.
- Soon jealousy is introduced in the other side of their relationship as an elder character attempts to convince Janie to leave Teacake for her son. Jealousy is one of the biggest downfalls in this relationship as well as most relationships.
- I don't like Teacake. You should marry my son, hes light skinned like you.
- Jealousy can be used to demonstrate the downfall of human emotions. It insights rage and sometimes the darkest parts our natural thoughts can be revealed. This is shown when Teacake beats Janie simply to prove to her that he still has "power" over her. This is a shock because Teacake has never shown this sort of rage before.
- In an effort to solve certain conflicts, Teacake tries to break up a fight at Mrs.Turner's restaurant. However, it results in more chaos. The author does this to show that nothing appears to be getting better no matter how hard they may try.
- There is a hurricane coming!
- A hurricane breaks out around them. Teacake and Janie decide to stay at their house along with one other worker. Destruction hits as this is the climax of the story.
