  • We can tax the states!
  • We need money to pay for the Revolutionary war.
  • Money that we don't have!
  • You can only pay your debts in coins. We will not accept any of the paper money!
  • You can't put me in jail! It's impossible for any farmer to pay these ridiculous taxes!
  • The newly formed United States need to pay back debt that they accumulated during the Revolutionary War. The Articles of Confederation required the states to pay taxes to help pay off the war debt.
  • Massachusetts cannot take away our land!
  • Massachusetts will only accept taxes in coins. Farmers are especially hard hit by this because they fought in the war and were paid in paper money, not in coins.
  • Hey, could you donate some money to end the Shaysites?
  • Massachusetts started taking away farmers land if they could not pay their taxes. They also put farmers in prison.
