  • In the beginning of Chapter one in the Red Badge Of Courage, Henry is a soldier for the union Army. His Regiment has not moved for around 2 weeks. for the past 2 weeks Henry and the Regiment Henry is in, has been staying in huts in the woods, near a river or some sort of body of water. The Regiment is anxious and hears rumors of fighting. A bunch of soldiers who hear those rumors debate weather or not these rumors are true. Henry goes into his hut and goes to lay down on his bunk. He needed to lay down and have some time to himself, because he did not know how to feel about actually fighting in war. He acknowledges the fireplace as he thinks about what will happen the next day. Henry knows the reason he wants to fight in this war, because he believes that going to war makes you patriotic. Henry also remembers how his mom never wanted him to fight in the war. She wanted Henry to be safe working on the farm back home.

  • While Henry is thinking about his mom, he remembers the time when he told his mother about enlisting in the Union Army. Henry's mom cried, but said that it is all in God's Will. Henry's mom knits him 8 pairs of socks and prepares him warm clothes. Henry misses working on the farm to a certain extent. Henry is anxious for his upcoming battle. Henry's mom always thought it was best for him to stay at home and work on the farm. When Henry is his bunk, he thinks back to working an his moms farm. To a certain extent Henry misses the Farm.

  • Henry starts to question his bravery at the end of chapter 1. He starts to fear that when the battle starts, that he will chicken out and stop fighting. He is worried that he will be looked at as a coward, and he desperately wants to prove his bravery to himself and to his fellow soldiers. Henry ask Jim if he thinks he will run from battle. Jim responds saying that he will probably do what everyone else does. Everyone else in Henry's Regiment is anxious and excited about fighting in battle. Some of the soldiers even look at battle as a play. Soldiers are sharing stories about war as well, but Henry senses that some of them are over exaggerating about their war stories.
