I would like to repeal the Townshend Act except the tax on tea.
The Townshend Act was originally written on June 29, 1767. It was named after its creator, Charles Townshend. It was made as an attempt by the British government to have firm control and political power over American colonies by placing import taxes on common goods such as paper, tea, and lead.
The Declaration of Independence
Colonists became fed up, and they decided to stop importing goods until they repealed the act, and boycott any that were imported outside of their agreement. This resulted in the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770.
The Declaration of Independence
On March 5, Charles successor asked for the Act to repealed on anything except tea. This caused division between colonial merchants and colonial craftsmen. This ultimately later resulted in the Boston Tea Party.
The colonists always found themselves butting heads with the British. Once they realized protesting wasn't getting British's attention, they decided to boycott. The Continental Congress thought that maybe they could reconcile with Britain, but then realized that that may not happen.
They came to the conclusion that the only way they could truly be free from Britain was by filing for independence. Thomas Jefferson wrote up the draft,. Benjamin Franklin and John Adams reviewed it. The final draft was presented on June 28, 1776 and then published on July 4th.
These are the websites I could find that I used.
